LeGaL’s 2018 Pride Reception

Celebrate Pride in style with the designers from HBO’s hit documentary Suited

This special panel discussion will put faces and stories to the concepts of “gender identity,” “gender expression,” gender non-conformity,” and “gender inclusion” by focusing on fashion, with a special look at the hit HBO documentary Suited.

What does it mean to each of us to present our outside selves in a way that makes us feel proud on the inside? That makes us feel seen? That makes us feel like our best, most authentic selves? The fashion industry’s traditional focus on tall, thin, heteronormative women, and lean, muscular, heteronormative men is upended by New York shop Bindle & Keep, a boutique offering custom made and tailored clothing for anyone of any gender, in any style. HBO featured Bindle & Keep in its documentary Suited, which examined the importance of tailored clothing to all, regardless of gender expression or identity. This panel will feature Everett Arthur and Rae Tutera from the Suited documentary, and Corinne Phillips, founder of a menswear-inspired clothing line geared towards trans and gender non-conforming individuals. We will foster a lively discussion around what it means to be you, to be me, and to be free.

We will also discuss laws regarding public accommodation and the workplace that reaffirm gender identity and expression, such as offering gender neutral restrooms and creating gender neutral leave policies.
